Celebrating the Best of Yorkshire

Celebrating Yorkshire Day! On 1st August it was Yorkshire Day, and we're absolutely chuffed to bits to celebrate the heart and soul of God’s Own Country and here at Avorium, a family‑run business in York since 2021, we're proud to honour Yorkshire’s heritage, food, landscapes, and spirit.

🏞️ Walking the Dales, Coast, and Villages
Yorkshire is blessed with some of England’s most stunning landscapes:

Grassington and Hawes, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, offer scenic trails, charming stone villages, and artisan produce - Hawes being the home of Wensleydale cheese, no less.

Along the Yorkshire Coast, head to Sandsend Beach near Whitby or Runswick Bay for long sandy walks, rock‑pool exploring and true North Sea views. Don’t miss villages like Robin Hood’s Bay for cliff‑top charm and fresh sea air. Whether you fancy a coastal amble or a moorland stroll, Yorkshire has walks that feed the soul.

🍽️ York’s Best Restaurants & Traditional Eats
York has earned its place as a vibrant culinary capital, mixing traditional fare with inventive menus. As The Times reports, restaurants like:

Roots (near York station) offers seasonal tasting menus featuring foraged and farmed ingredients.

Pearly Cow, in No. 1 York boutique hotel, excels at Sunday roasts with flawless Yorkshire puds.

The Star Inn the City boasts riverside fine‑dining using local produce.

Other favourites include classic Bettys Tea Rooms, authentic Neapolitan at Cresci, and global fusion at Skosh, 22 Yards, and Partisan.

For a more family‑friendly or independent vibe, Ambiente Tapas and the playful Plush Cafe (swing‑seats and teddy toast!) are top picks for locals and visitors alike.

🍦 Ice Cream & Fish & Chips: Yorkshire Classics
For ice cream, York is dotted with cosy independent parlours offering everything from classic vanilla to artisan flavours—especially delightful on a sunny August day.

And you can always rely on proper fish and chips by the seaside - try places around Whitby or Sandsend, or inland chippies in quaint villages. Freshly battered cod or haddock with salty chips and mushy peas? Perfect.

📍 Charming Coastal Villages
Yorkshire’s coastline is sprinkled with idyllic spots:

Sandsend: A long sandy stretch going toward Whitby - popular for surfers, fishers, and families alike.

Runswick Bay: Scenic views, beach walks, and pastel‑painted fishermen’s cottages.

Robin Hood’s Bay: Moody cliffs, narrow streets and a dose of inspiration for walkers and artists.

These villages serve up seaside serenity and a glimpse of Yorkshire’s quieter side.

🎉 Yorkshire Day: Traditions & Celebrations
Yorkshire Day itself commemorates the Battle of Minden (1 August 1759), when Yorkshire regiments famously marched into battle wearing white roses—now the county emblem. First celebrated by the Yorkshire Ridings Society in 1975, it became official in York in 1985.

And no Yorkshire Day is complete without a slice of parkin, that classic sticky ginger‑treacle oat cake tied to Yorkshire traditions.

In York, Visit York are staging artisan markets, seaside‑themed events in the city centre, face painting, and the Seagull Trail at Shambles Market—all part of the civic celebration from 1–3 August.

🎨 A Note from Avorium
Down in York City Centre, Avorium is a family affair rooted in Yorkshire pride. Since opening in 2021, we've offered sustainable, pastel desk accessories you can personalise while you shop. We're part of this vibrant artisan community—right in the heart of the festivities during Yorkshire Day.

We’re inspired by the local creativity, the supportive small‑business spirit, and the county’s tradition of doing things “fer thissen”—always striving to deliver beauty, quality, and a distinctly Yorkshire approach to everything we do.

From the grit and heritage of its battlefields to the creaminess of its dairy and the beauty of its moors and coastline, Yorkshire is a county of passion, tradition, and heart. Today, on Yorkshire Day, we at Avorium celebrate every bit of that spirit.

With every walk, every crispy chip, every scoop of ice cream, and every memorable meal in York or beyond, we honour the land that’s home. So, whether you’re York-born or just visiting, raise your tea cup, wear your rose, and join in – and perhaps stop by Avorium for something pastel-perfect to take home. Happy Yorkshire Day!
