What are the Best ways to Travel to the York Christmas Market this Festive Season
With York Christmas Market just around the corner, we wanted to give our ultimate guide to the best modes of transport to reach the market. We've outlined below our tips and ticks for the best parking spots, modes of transport and routes into the city to maximise your visit!
Arriving by Train:
York Train Station is located very close to the city centre. With routes coming in from all corners of the country, this is a lovely way to arrive in York. Simply walk up Station Road and turn onto Parliament Street and you'll reach the market within 10 minutes or so. It's a lovely route over the river, and no parking to worry about! Probably the ultimate way to arrive if you are planning on staying over for a night or two. Our top picks for Hotels near the Station include 'The Milner', 'The Grand' and 'Middletons'.
Arriving by Car:
York is surrounded by plenty of car parks and options. The best located for the Christmas Market are Coppergate Car Park, Castle Car Park and Marygate Car Park, ranging from a 3 minute stroll to a 10 minute walk through town. A very flexible option but also the most expensive and reliant on traffic. A quick warning for drivers, rates during the Christmas Market start at £5.30 per hour BUT lower rates can be found at Bishopthorpe Road, East Parade and Rowntree Park car parks.
York Park and Ride:
Avorium's number one pick for how to attend the market. The convenience of using a car without the annoyance of traffic and parking costs. With 6 services around the city, this is a convenient option and great for the environment. With standard return rates starting at £3.90 and free travel for up the 3 children, the York Park and Ride is a great sustainable way to travel without breaking the bank. Save all your spending for the market!
Coach Trips:
Since the York Christmas Market is such a lovely seasonal destination, there are coach trips available from all over the country. Instead of coming to the city for the day, why not make a weekend out of it by utilising the array of coach trip services available.
Arriving by Bike:
York is filled with spaces and areas to park bikes, making it a very cycle friendly city. A great eco friendly commute, with no cost, and plenty of flexibility around parking. Have confidence in York's reputation as a very safe city. The best option for semi local visitors!
As you can see, York is hugely accessible and has options for every mode of transport. With plenty of spaces for cars, bikes and coaches, the possibilities are endless with how to make the most of your visit to the Christmas Market. At Avorium, we recommend getting the train into the city or utilising the park and ride service. The train option is the most luxurious arrival, with a lovely route into the city and still means you can have a mulled wine or two! The park and ride is our most convenient pick, take advantage of the 6 drop off locations as well as saving considerably on parking costs.
We can't wait to welcome you to York and the market in a couple of weeks, and enjoy the festive season this Christmas!
